April 27, 2012
Ms. Tania Watson
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
Water Quality Control Division - Permits and Enforcement
4300 Cherry Creek Drive South
Denver, CO 80222 -1530
Phone: (303) 692 -3603
RE: PERMIT CO- 0027154; MARCH 2012 and FIRST QUARTER 2012 DMRS
Dear Tania:
\ JOO
h A t no
Twentymile Coal Company
29515 Routt County Road # 27
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
(970) 879 -3800
During the months of January and February 2012, no Outfalls discharged. This may have been the result of limited snow fall
and low temperatures. During the month of March, Outfall 005A, 005W, MON5 (all Pond D) flowed each week of the month.
Outfalls 003A and 006A flowed the last two weeks in March. Outfalls 002A (Pond T), 007A/007W /MON7 (all Pond F), and
outfall 008A flowed only one week during March. Outfall 004A did not flow during the period.
In March, there were two exceedances at Outfall 005A, for total recoverable iron, which included the 30 day max, and 30 day
average. This may have been a result of erosion from the initial spring snow melt. There were no other exceedances. Also
note that the wrong analytical list was requested for metals for Outfall MON -7. As a result, we ran several metals that are not
required in the permit, and omitted four that are required (arsenic, chromium, lead, and nickel). I've attached the lab report for
the analyses that were run.
Please call me directly: (970) 870 -2750 with any questions.
Very truly yours,
Brian A. Watterson, P.G.
Geologist, Environmental Group
Twentymile Coal Company
Enclosures
cc: DRMS; CWPS Permit No. CO- 0027154 file
