However, the quantity
was limited because a small bottle had to be used, and it was not
an efficient sampling device.
The sample collected in June was analyzed, as required, for
flow, temperature, conductivity and pH. Sufficient water could not
be obtained, however, for analysis of other parameters.
In an effort to collect more water required for sampling,
the bottle was lowered a second time. The bottle became wedged at
the bend in the well pipe. Efforts to dislodge the sampling bottle
broke the rope, and the bottle was lodged in the well pipe
preventing collection of more water.
Repeated efforts were made, both during the June sampling
period and over the course of the summer, to dislodge the bottle.
Among the methods attempted was to drop a heavy bolt down the well
with the objective of weighting the bottle and pushing it to the
bottom of the well. Neither this nor other methods worked.
Finally, in November, a method was devised which proved
successful and a full sample obtained. A 65-foot length of 1k-inch
PVC pipe was assembled and forced down the well. This smaller pipe
dislodged the bottle, and it was also used to collect the sample.
The smaller pipe was capped at the bottom and holes had been
drilled along the bottom 3-feet of the pipe. These perforations
allowed water to run into and collect in the lowermost portion of
the smaller pipe. It was then pulled out of the well and a sample
thus collected.
Mid-Continent anticipates that this method will be employed
to collect future samples from GW-1. The bend in the well pipe
cannot be corrected.
Full sample results were obtained from other wells in the
area of the Sutey refuse pile during June. These sample results
and the results obtained from GW-1 in the fall indicated good water
and no problems.
Mid-Continent's difficulty in completing the sample at this
well certainly did not result from and do not reflect its
unwarranted failure to comply. This failure to comply was the
result of an unforeseen impossibility resulting from a quirk of
