material mixed in with the coarse spoil , and some mulch residue is
apparent. There are scattered pockets of vegetation establishment
here, mostly within depressions where mulch has accumulated.
Vegetation establishment gets progressively better toward the south
end of the slope.
The final area I looked at was the relatively flat bench located
southwest of the 5 Mine, and several hundred feet higher in
elevation. This was a pre-law outcrop mine reclaimed by AML in
1991 . Coaly spoil comprised a significant component of the surface
material at this site. The graded surface was amended with a 5
ton/acre application of native grass hay mulch. With the exception
of approximately 1/2 acre at the south end of the bench, a
satisfactory stand of seeded vegetation has been established. The
area of poor establishment (<5% cover) is on loose coaly spoil,
with a slope exposure of approximately 10% to the southwest. The
remainder of the bench is relatively level, or slightly sloping to
the north and east. Average cover on the remainder of the bench is
probably 25-30%, with primary species including orchardgrass,
timothy, western yarrow, rocky mountain penstemon, sheep fescue,
cicer milkvetch, white dutch clover, smooth brome, kentucky
bluegrass, slender wheatgrass, and dandelion. Due to the high
elevation and the growth medium, the plants are low growing. Few
of the grasses have headed out yet, nor have the forbs flowered,
qVe to the delayed growing season this year.
c:\cbasveg.dtm
