Hernandez, Alysha
From:
Stark, Jim
Sent:
Thursday, April 26, 2012 2:00 PM
To:
Welt, Kathy
Cc:
DRMS- Coal -Admin
Subject:
West Elk 1Q12 DMR's
Kathy,
The Division has received and reviewed the 1Q12 DMR's submitted this morning for the West Elk Mine. Only three
ponds discharged during the reporting period, the wastewater treatment pond (007A), MB -4 (008A) and pond SG -1
(014A). All of the sampling was completed as required and there were no eiceedences noted. The Division has one
question regarding the reporting for pond SG -1. The detection level for the suspended solids for pond SG -1 was listed
a <20 mg /l and a value of <20 mg /l was reported. However, this detection level seems to be higher than the
"normal" detection level for suspended solids (of <10 mg /l or <5 mg /1). While the <20 mg /l detection level is still
below the daily and monthly maximums for suspended solids (70 mg /l and 35 mg /1, respectively), is still appears too
high to provide any useful information. This is further confused by the fact that a value of 19 mg /l was reported
for the suspended solids for pond MB -4 and values of 4mg /l and 7mg /l were reported for suspended solids for the
wastewater treatment pond. Please explain why the detection level for suspended solids was so high for pond SG-
1. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
