EXHIBIT M - GEOTECHNICAL STABILITY
This site consists of large marble waste blocks of up to 12' x 8' x 8' with some marble fines interspersed
around the blocks on slopes ranging from 1 H:1 V to 1.8H:1 V.
The large marble block piles have shown stability over their history, with a number of the large block
piles having been in place at Yule Quarry for over 80 years. The large size of the marble blocks means
that any pile of them does not behave like a typical earth slope. The maximum angle of repose of these
block piles is higher than the material's internal angle of friction for smaller size material.
The other primary source of slope instability is sediment flowing down the slopes underneath and
amongst the large waste blocks. However, with the installation of the sediment and runoff control
system shown in this permit applications sediment will not be flowing through the waste block piles.
Once mining and reclamation are complete, vegetation that is established will provide further slope
stability and runoff control.
The stability of the new Portal #5 is addressed in
Yule Quarry April 2012 59
