5. Revegetation
Because the original vegetation in the western portions of the affected area is sparse to nonexistent, and
because The Marble Historical Society has requested that the marble waste piles remain exposed, only
limited revegetation was anticipated by Sierra as well as CSQ. Re- vegetation will involve placement of
marble fines because this material is proven to be a good growing soil; on existing access roads and
facilities areas.
The total area to be re- vegetated is expected to be about 2.19 acres.
1. The depth of soil is planned to be approximately 6 inches, comparable with sparse soils in the
area.
2. The access roads and facilities area will be active throughout the life of operations, so topsoil
placement and re- vegetation will occur only after mining is complete. Seed beds for the grass
and forbs mix will be prepared by ripping any compacted areas to 6 inches, followed by
placement of non - compacted marble's fines as a topsoil substitute. Marble fine is a fertilization
agent and no addition of outside fertilization will be required.
3. Based on successful revegetation of the Mid - Continent limestone quarry near Glenwood Springs,
CO, Greg Lewicki and Associates has recommended the seed mix listed below. This seed mix
was applied in a low to zero topsoil environment on steep slopes (1.5H:1 V and greater).
4. Shrubs will be planted from container stock or transplanted or started from root cuttings from
wild stock in the immediate area. Trees are planned to be planted from seedling, tubers, or
transplanted from the site. The planned species of shrubs are those consistent with the area such
as Oregon grape, cinquefoil, current, rose, mountain snowberry, and Rocky Mountain maple.
The planned species of trees are those consistent with the area such as spruce, fir, pine and aspen.
Shrubs and trees will be planted randomly in the re- vegetated areas to create diversity of form
and color, and to extend stands of similar species. A minimum of 75 trees will be planted, with a
minimum of 25 shrub plantings. Tree and shrub seedlings /tubers will be planted with shingle
protective boards or a similar protective structure to prevent desiccation and assist in
establishment. If necessary, protective mesh will be used to prevent wildlife from eating fresh
seedling stock.
Yule Quarry April 2012 48
