OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M -1987 -009
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: SJR
INSPECTION DATE: April 18, 2012
This was a normal monitoring inspection of the Jones Pit East; DRMS file No. M- 1987 -009 operated by Prowers
County. This is a 26.9 acre 112c mining operation located approximately 1.5 miles south and 1.5 miles east of
Bristol, Colorado in Prowers County. I, Stephanie Reigh of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and
Safety (Division) conducted the inspection. Mr. Mark Dorenkamp accompanied me on the inspection.
The appropriate mine entrance sign was in place. The permit boundaries were all clearly marked.
The current disturbance is located in the southern portion of the permit area and is approximately 20 acres in
size and moving to the north. The excavation is about 10 to 12 feet deep with a vertical highwall with an
eastern aspect. The highwall appears to be nearly abutting the eastern permit boundary. Topsoil has been
stripped and is located in the southeast and southwest corners of the site and is stabilized with vegetative
cover.
During this inspection, Tamarisk trees were observed throughout the permit area. This issue is cited as a
problem at the beginning of this report and will require corrective action to be taken by the Operator. The
Operator will need to submit a weed management plan in the form of a Technical Revision to the reclamation
plan. The Operator will need to include the following information in the Technical Revision:
a.) A list of potential species of invasive weeds that may occur on the site (Russian Olive, Tamarisk, Canada
Thistle, Leafy Spurge...etc.)
b.) A description of the various control measures that will be employed for the weed species such as
mechanical, chemical, biological control or a combination of the three methods.
c.) Submit a monitoring plan that describes how often the operator will monitor the site for noxious weeds
(monthly, bi- monthly etc.) and what action will occur if noxious weed are observed.
d.) A post treatment monitoring plan to determine control effectiveness.
e.) A commitment that the weed control plan will be implemented for the life of the permit.
The fee for the Technical Revision is $216.00.
