TAB 9
ATTACHMENT 9-4
SOIL SURVEY - SCRAPER PITS
INTRODUCTION
Peabody Coal Company will disturb approximately 146 acres of native
soils, topsoiled reclamation areas and regraded spoils during the next
two years (1987-1988) at Nucla Mine. Mine-related disturbance will
occur in five separate areas as shown on Exhibit 12-1 , Operations Plan.
Soil surveys at an Order 1-2 intensity were completed in 1979 and 1980
for mining Areas 1 , 4, and 5. The following soil assessment was
completed to determine the quality and quantity of topsoil which is
available to be salvaged from mining Areas 2 and 3.
HISTORICAL. PERSPECTIVE OF PREVIOUS SOIL SURVEYS
Peabody Coal Company, in conjunction with the USDA, Soil Conservation
Service, Norwood, Colorado, conducted a reconnaissance of Nucla Mine
surface soils in 1975. This soils map, originally completed on 1" _
400' aerial photos dated July 22, 1975, was submitted as part of Surface
Mine Permit (SMP) 75-36 (see Exhibit C-5, Soils Map, 7-22-75) . This
initial Order 3 soil survey included the entire Nucla Mine Control Area
(Portions of Sections 25, 26, 35, and 36 in T47N, R16W and Sections 30
and 31 in T47N, R15W) .
An Order 1-2 soil survey was completed by Claude L. Fly and Associates
in May, 1979 for the 116-acre miring tract located predominantly in the
SW 1/4 of Section 25, T47N, R16W. This soil survey information,
submitted as Tab 9 of SMP C-008-81, included all of Mining Area 1 (see
Exhibit 12-1, Operations Plan, and Exhibit 9-1, Soil Types) .
Two additional Order 1-2 soil surveys were completed for Nucla Mine in
1979 and 1980. First, the East Pit soil survey addition, completed in
November, 1979, is located 0.5 miles southeast of the Nucla Mine office
in the SW 1/4 NW 1/4 and the NW 1/4 SW 1/4 of Section 31 , T47N, R15 W.
This survey information, presented as Attachment 9-2A to Tab 9, SMP
4 ' '
