78
State Reg. Federal Reg.
that will require topsoil replacement is 111.77 acres. By di-
viding the number of acre-feet--available topsoil (127.27) by
the number of acres to be disturbed (111.77) , it 's estimated
that appro tely 1.14 feet of highly suitable soil will
be repladQ., ----
This topsoil replacement depth will be beneficial to establish-
ing a good seedbed and rooting medium. The anticipated sandy
clay loam texture will have favorable infiltration and water
holding characteristics. Also, the spoil medium immediately
below the topsoil will have desirable chemical and physical char-
acteristics for plant growth including a loamy texture, low
sodium absorption ratio and electrical conductivity, medium sat-
uration percentage for favorable water holding characteristics,
and no minor element toxicity problems (see Tab 6 - Geologic
Information, Overburden Assessment) .
IV. TOPSOIL HANDLING SCHEDULE
Topsoil removal and replacement has been estimated by calculating
an annual topsoil budget. The topsoil demand (graded acres times
topsoil replacement depth) was calculated and compared to the top-
soil supply. If supply exceeded demand for a particular year,
topsoil was stockpiled. If demand was greater than supply,
materials were removed fran the stockpile. Table 9-4 shows
Nuc1a Mine's anticipated topsoil handling schedule.
The topsoil salvage and distribution operation will maximize
take and put methods whenever feasible throughout the life of
the permit (Table 9-4) . This technique is economically desirable
and also maintains a high topsoil quality including direct trans-
fer of viable seeds and roots, low compaction, better structure
and high nutrient status. Spoil piles are expected to be graded
and topsoiled within one (1) year (generally represents three to
