24
The soils have low salt contents and moderate pH; the corrosivity of
steel or concrete is assumed to be low also (Terzaghi, Karl and Peck,
R.B. , 1948; ASTM-C-88-46T, SCS Soils Handbook; others) .
The Stockpiles
Ten topsoil stockpiles, shown on the mine area base map were sampled
and satrples sent to the Peabody Coal Laboratory for analysis. Three
sets of Oa sited samples were taken from different parts of each
stockpile. The results of the analysis are given in Table 6. The
locations of 01(a stockpiles are shown on MAp 3.
A brief description of each stockpile is given here. Stockpiles 1,
2,3 and 4 are small stockpiles of soil and partly mixed shale and
saristone located some distance southeast of the central office build-
ings on a Mope adjacent to excavations. (See Stockpile Location
Map) Stockpile 1 appears to be a calcareous sandy loam with some 2%
or more of sandstone fragments. Stockpile 2 is nearby and similar
in texture but has some grayish shale fragments mingled with sand-
stone and comprising 5% or more of the total volume. Stockpiles 3
and 4 are small piles nearby which are similar to 1 and 2 but contain
a few more stones. Stockpile 4 has slightly higher clay content and
higher percentage of CaCO3 9.3% vs 4.2-4.9% for stockpiles 1-3.
The other stockpiles were located along the roads leading to and
surrounding the 116-acre tract and except for No.5 are shown on the
maps of that tract (Maps 1-2) . Stockpile 5 is a reddish-colored
sandy clay loiwm and may be road-cut soil material. Yellowish and
grayish shales wi game sandstone underlies the soil here. Stockpile
6 is a very small pile ref sandy loam material from the road cuts.
Stockpile 7 is the largest and 'Lies along 1200 feet of the field
road on the northside. The soil is a reddish brown, sandy clay loam
resulting from mixing soil and underlying soft sandy shale. Stock-
pile 8 is across the road at the west end of No.7. The soil is a
pale reddish brown slightly calcareous sandy clay loam. Stockpile 9
extending sane 900 feet on the east side of the north-south field
