13
moderately calcareous (fizz point = 3-4) and have a pH of 7.4-7.9.
The C horizons may range in thickness fran 6" to 40" or more,
grading into soft calcareous shales. Persayo clay loam contains
fragments of sandstone and shale in most parts of the profile.
Textures range from sandy clay loams to sandy clays; colors range
from yellowish brown (10YR5/6) , dry, to strong brown (7.5YR 5/6)
or even reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) , moist. There seems to be some
influence of the reddish colored aeolian deposits found in many
parts of southwestern Colorado. Structure is coarse angular blocky
to massive; hard to very hard, dry; friable moist and sticky, wet;
violently effervescent; the pH ranges fron 7.6-8.0. Very few roots
were noted in this section of the profile.
9904 D 1,2 Topsoil Suitability. These steeply sloping, shallow
soils over sandstone and shale can be expected to be less suitable
for topsoil as they are thin over sandstone and shale, having varying
quantities of sandstone and shale in the profile and have poor
texture-consistence relations. On these soils and slopes an
average 4" of fair topsoil may be obtained but a cut of 1 foot will
likely produce materials rated poor by the prevailing guidelines.
Prime Farm Land Considerations. These soils are suited for native
grasslands but not for cultivation.
Soil Distribution and Extent
The soil pattern of the 116-acre tract is shown on Map 1 at a scale
of 1 inch = 400 feet. The major soil, Shavano sandy clay loam,
5-20% slopes, occupies over 560 of the area. A small part, 10.85
acres, in the northwest portion surrounding the farm house is a
gentle divide of 2-5% slope. Most of these soils are on moderate
