6
7/22/175.1/ A photo of 11/18/ 78 was used for the soil delinea-
tions. From the soils map a mylar was prepared. It is a stripping
isopach showing depth of stripping, classified quality of topsoil
material and limitations.
Field observations and laboratory data were used to prepare inter-
pretations tables 4 and 5. Topsoil quantities were ccuputed from
measurement of the map and soil horizon thickness and quality.
DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA
The area mapped includes the S 2 SW 4, the S; N 2 SW 4 and about 16
acres in the WZ SW,- SEQ of Section 25, T47N R16W in Montrose
County, Colorado. The total area is approximately 116 acres. A
previously disturbed or stripped area of about 13 acres along the
south border of SE4 SWQ was not typed as a soil map unit.
CLIMATE
The climate is typically continental intermountain with cold win-
ters, moderately hot summers, low rainfall and relatively short
growing seasons. The Colorado Weather Bureau report for Norwood
(nearest longtime station) is shown in Table 1.
Norwood is about 20 miles nearer the mountains at an elevation of
7020 feet and can be expected to have slightly cooler climate and
higher precipitation than at the Nucla area where elevations of
the field mapped range between 5672 and 5767 feet. With no exact
data, it is anticipated the mean annual temperature (MAT) should
be about 450 F (7.29C) and the mean annual precipitation (MAP) would
be about 12 inches (30.5 centimeters) . The soil temperature zone is
classed as "frigid" (<eC) and the moisture regime as ustic.
Other reports show about 50 inches A-pan evaporation potential
1/ See clap labelled Job No. 3424 P, Photo 7/22/75, Photo Symbol
BFP. Mapped by Park Aerial Surveys, Inc. , Louisville, Ky.
