The number of deer utilizing the Nucla East study area is small even in winter when
numbers are augmented by animals descended from neighboring plateaus. Also, no deer
appear to be restricted solely to the study area. Therefore, even though a small amount
of potential deer habitat will be eliminated in the study area, the extent and quality of
deer habitat in the surrounding region will provide sufficient food and cover to reduce
any mining-related habitat loss. Furthermore, even though some deer are present, the
Nucla area has been designated as an area experiencing pronounced crop depredation by deer
by the CDOW and special provisions were made to allow the hunting and reduction of deer in
the Nucla area (see the Colorado Big Game Hunt Regulations, 1987).
Furbearers. The principal trappable furbearers in the study area are the muskrat and
raccoon. Only a limited amount of habitat for either species will be eliminated by mining
and no impact on their populations in the Nucla area will occur.
Literature Cited
American Ornithologists Union. 1983.
