IV. GROUND WATER
A. Operational Ground Water Monitoring Program
The operational ground water monitoring program as approved in
the Nucla Mine Permit is detailed in Appendix A (Attachment A) ,
Reduction of Monitoring for the Nucla Strip. The location of each
of the well sites and pertinent site information are presented on
Exhibit 1 and Table 21, respectively. Included on this map and
table are those sites which have been established subsequent to
implementation of the monitoring program outlined in Appendix A;
specifically, wells GW-N23 through N25 were nstalled this summer
(1986) to gather baseline ground water information in the scraper
area. The remaining additional wells which were installed this
summer were dedicated to gathering bas line ground water
information for the Nucla East Mine area. Upon completion, each of
these new wells have been monitored monthly for water levels and
sampled quarterly for water quality for those parameters listed in
Table 22, excluding the wells to be us d as aquifer test
piezometers. Well completion data and lithologic logs for these
new wells are presented in Appendix D. Figures 14, 15, and 16 are
well completion schematics for these recently installed wells.
Additions to the existing ground water mo itoring network are
also proposed for 1987. Three spoils wells are proposed for the
reclaimed areas. Figure 16a is a generic well completion schematic
for the proposed wells to be completed in reclaimed spoil . The
locations of these additional wells are shown on Exhibit 1. The
three spoils wells will be completed in order to better define and
evaluate the quality and quantity of water in the reclaimed areas.
Ground water levels are measured to the neare t hundreth of a foot
from the top of the well casing using a S it Test water level
probe. The probe battery is tested daily upon use and the accuracy
of the probe is checked against a steel measuring tape whenever the
probe tip is replaced.
