Introduction
The information assembled in this 1991 Annual Hydrologic Report (AHR) includes data
collected from approved monitoring sites established at Peabody Coal Company's Nucla Mine
(Permit No. C -81 -008). Surface water information assembled include instantaneous and mean
daily discharge measurements, NPDES discharge monitoring reports, and water quality
analysis results. Ground water information include water level measurements and water
quality analysis results. Reported surface and ground water information collected at
monitoring sites associated with Peabody's Nucla Mine encompass the 1991 water year
(October 1, 1990 through September 30, 1991). Locations of monitoring sites discussed in
this report can be found by referring to Exhibit 1, Hydrology Monitoring Site Location
Map, submitted as part of the 1988 AHR for the Nucla Mine.
The following sections present discussion about monitoring activities conducted during the
1991 water year as part of the approved hydrologic monitoring program during temporary
cessation (see Appendix 15-4, Tab 15, revised Nucla PAP).
Precipitation Data
Precipitation data for the environs of the Nucla Mine from January 1980 through September
1991 are presented in Table 1. Included are data for stations at Norwood, Uravan, and at
Nucla East (refer to Tab 8, revised Nucla PAP). The Nucla East station consists of one
Belfort Model 5 -780 universal recording rain gauge, equipped with a 32 -day electric drive
chart recorder, and a 12 -inch capacity weighing bucket. This gauge has been in reliable
operation since August 26, 1987.
Surface Water
Cessation Monitoring Program at Nucla Mine. Monitoring activities conducted at the Nucla
Mine during the 1991 water year were performed in accordance with the approved hydrologic
monitoring program during temporary cessation. Table 2 provides a summary of surface
water monitoring sites and monitoring frequencies during temporary cessation associated
with the Nucla Mine. NPDES monitoring was performed in accordance with Peabody's Nucla
Mine NPDES Permit CO- 0000213 (as amended on July 25, 1990).
1
