3 .2 MITIGATION REQUIREMENTS
Mitigation water will be needed to augment water rights
that might be impacted by mining. During the mining
operation, water will directly enter the pit from precip-
itation and seepage from the overburden aquifer, which is
primarily replenished by irrigation water that percolates
into the aquifer. Water levels in the vicinity of the pit
will be lowered by pumping of the water from the pit. Annual
inflow into the NUCLA EAST pit from the overburden aquifer
has been estimated to be 43 . 8 acre-feet (Reference 3) during
the fifth year of mining. At the end of five years,
drawdown of one foot in the overburden-aquifer water table
is estimated to occur at 0.7 miles from the center of the
NUCLA EAST pit, and greater drawdown will occur at shorter
distances. The following should be noted:
a. The quantity of pit inflow and the areal extent
of the drawdown represent the fifth year of
operation. Mining in the earlier years will have a
smaller impact on the water levels, and inflow rates
will be lower.
b. Calculations used to estimate pit inflow do not
include the contributions resulting from irrigation
water percolating into the overburden aquifer in the
16
GEOTRANS, INC.
