APPENDIX 15-4
HYDROLOGIC MONITORING PROGRAM
FOR NUCLA MINE DURING TEMPORARY CESSATION
Introduction
Since mining has ceased and reclamation operations are reduced, reduced hydrologic
monitoring activities are planned for the Nucla and Nucla East areas during temporary
cessation. The following presents a description of the hydrologic monitoring procedures
to be conducted and justification for reducing portions of the monitoring plan during
temporary cessation.
It should be emphasized that the following hydrologic monitoring plan will only be
implemented during temporary cessation. Normal hydrologic monitoring, as outlined in Tab
15 of the approved Permit Application Package (PAP) will be resumed when the mine is
reactivated. Annual Hydrologic Reports (AHR's) will continue to be prepared and submitted
to the Division during cessation. Reports will be submitted on or before January 31
following the end of each water year.
Nucla Area
The proposed ground water monitoring plan for the Nucla area is outlined in Table 1 .
Hydrologic monitoring site locations are shown in Exhibit 1 of the 1988 Nucla AHR. Ground
water level measurements will be conducted semiannually, and ground water quality will be
measured annually during the irrigation season (September). Semiannual discharge and
water quality measurements (including field parameters) will be made at Spoil Spring #1
and Spoil Spring #2. Hydrologic monitoring will be discontinued at the Highwall Spring
due to inaccessibility.
The proposed surface water monitoring program for the Nucla area is outlined in Table 2.
Surface water sites SW-N1, SW-N3, and SW-N7 will be monitored to detect any possible
hydrologic changes that occur during temporary cessation. Flow and water quality
measurements will be measured semiannually at these sites. Surface water site SW-N5
(NPDES 001 ) will continue to be monitored in accordance with Peabody's NPDES (National
Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit for Nucla Mine. However, the continuous
stage recorder will be maintained and semiannual full suite water quality samples will be
collected. Surface water site SW-N6 has been eliminated from the temporary cessation
15-4-1 Revised 02/22/90
