TAB 15
HYDROLOGIC MONITORING PROGRAM
Introduction
A ground and surface water monitoring program has been developed to evaluate and assess
the existing ground and surface water system at the Nucla Mine and Nucla East mining
areas. The program is essentially a tool to predict and monitor the impacts of mining.
The goal of the monitoring program is to supply data that will be used as a reference to
support conclusions given in the Probable Hydrologic Consequences (PHC, Tab 17).
Hydrologic information is collected and analyzed using accepted scientific techniques. It
is anticipated that mining disturbances to the hydrologic balance will be minimal and that
the potential uses of the ground and surface water system will not be changed. The
results and interpretation of the hydrologic data are discussed in Tab 7, Hydrologic
Description.
Surface Water Monitoring Program
Nucla East Baseline Surface Water Monitoring Program (July 1986-July 1987). Surface water
monitoring activities conducted since July, 1986 at monitoring sites established in and
around Peabody's proposed Nucla East mining area have been consistent with the approved
baseline monitoring program. This program was proposed and outlined in a letter submitted
to Mr. Steve Renner from Peabody personnel on April 21, 1986. Approval of the baseline
monitoring program for the Nucla East mining area was issued, with minor amendments, in a
letter received by Peabody from Mr. Peter O'Connor of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Division (CMLRD) on May 6, 1986. The location of each surface water monitoring site in
the Nucla East area is presented on Exhibit 7-1 (Tab 7) Hydrology Monitoring Site Location
Map, Nucla and Nucla East Mine. Table 15-2 lists each Nucla East surface water monitoring
site, location, and type of flow measurement performed at each site. During the baseline
surface water monitoring program, each site was visited on a monthly basis to maintain and
service all the instrumentation, take flow measurements, and collect water quality
samples. The Nucla East baseline surface water monitoring program is outlined in Appendix
15-1, Page 15-1-1.
Current Surface Water Monitoring Activities for Nucla and Nucla East Mining Area (July
1987- Present.
