Nucla East Baseline Ground Water Monitoring Program (July 1986-July 1987). As previously
mentioned, the Nucla East baseline monitoring program was approved by the CMLRD on May 6,
1986. During the baseline ground water monitoring program, all wells were measured on a
monthly basis for static water levels. All monitor wells with the exception of
observation wells were sampled for water quality on a quarterly basis (January, April ,
July, October). There was a completion problem associated with Monitor Well GW-N17 so the
observation well GW-N17P1 is the designated water quality sample well at this location.
The sampling procedure used for each well is described on Table 15-7. The location of
each monitor well site is shown on Exhibit 7-1 (Tab 7).
Current Ground Water Monitoring Program for Nucla and Nucla East (July 1987-Present).
Ground water monitor activities currently being conducted at the Nucla and Nucla East
mining areas are described in Appendix 15-1, Pages 15-1-9 through 15-1-11 . With the
current monitoring program, all wells are measured monthly for static water levels.
Selected monitor wells proximate to mining and the proposed mining disturbance are sampled
semiannually or quarterly. Table 15-7 describes the sampling procedures for each well .
The location of each monitor well site is shown on Exhibit 7-1 (Tab 7). Peabody has and
will continue to sample any additional monitor wells for water quality on an as need basis
even though they are not specifically designated in the monitoring program to be sampled
for water quality.
Springs at the Nucla Mine are visited on a monthly basis to measure flow and field water
quality parameters. On a semiannual basis, full suite water quality samples are
collected. The surface water quality parameter list (see Pages 15-1-5 and 15-1-6 in
Appendix 15-1) details those parameters analyzed in all spring and seep water quality
samples.
In 1987, two spoil spring surveys were conducted within and adjacent to the Nucla permit
boundary. The first survey was conducted in May of 1987 and the second in September,
1987. Both surveys included visual observations for seeps and springs, and resulted in no
siting of any additional seeps or springs within the surveyed area. There were no springs
found in the vicinity of Nucla East. As can be seen on Exhibit 10-2 in Addendum 10-3 of
Tab 10, there are numerous wet Swale areas located in the Nucla East area. During the
non-irrigation season (October 15 through April 15), the wet areas quickly begin to
desiccate.
15-19 Revised 08/19/88
