Sedimentology
Particle Size Distribution. The particle size distribution for this sediment pond was
taken from Simons, Li and Associates (Design of Sediment Control Measures for Small Areas
in Surface Coal Mining). This distribution is representative of a sandy loam soil similar
to those described in Tab 9 of the current Nucla Mine permit.
The inputted soil particle distribution is as follows:
Particle Size (mm) Percent Finer
2.0000 100.0
1.0000 100.0
0.1000 85.0
0.0500 80.0
0.0020 20.0
0.0001 0.0
The specific gravity of the soil and the submerged bulk specific gravity were estimated
based on the references cited above. Specific gravity and submerged bulk specific gravity
were estimated to be 2.5 and 1.25, respectively.
Length-Slope Factor (L,S). The slope length (L) and the slope (S) were determined
together accordjrg to the equation:
X\LS = [ ]m (430x 2 + 30x + 0.43)
72.6 6.613
where Xis slope length, X is sin 6, Ais slope angle and m is an exponent dependent
upon slope given by:
slope <3% m = 0.3
slope = 4% m = 0.4
slope > 5% m = 0.5
8
