INTRODUCTION
Sediment Pond 006 is an earthen embankment structure constructed by
Peabody Coal Company in the mid-1970's as a temporary sediment structure
to control runoff and sediment from the disturbed areas of the Nucla
Mine. Sediment Pond 006 is located in Section 36 of Township 47 North,
Range 16 West, Northwest of the town of Nucla (see Exhibit 13-4) .
INSPECTION
On July 8, 1986, engineers from Peabody' s Compliance Engineering Depart-
ment inspected Sediment Pond No. 006. The purpose of this inspection was
to assess the safety and general condition of the structure with respect
to the regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
(CMLRD) . As a result of this inspection, it was determined that the
storage capacity of No. 006 was inadequate and there was some rills and
gullies in addition to a small slide on the downstream face of the
enbankment. It is Peabody' s intention to repair these deficiencies in
accordance with the remedial compliance plan contained in this report.
SITE DESCRIPTION
LAND USE
Sediment Pond No. 006 has a 262-acre watershed that is tributary to Tuttle
Draw. This watershed is classified as approximately 58 percent
undisturbed, 20 percent disturbed, and 22 percent reclaimed.
EMBANKMENT
The existing embankment is a homogeneous earth filland is presently very
well vegetated. The top width of the embankment is a minimum 20 feet wide
with upstream and downstream slopes of approximately lh: ly, each. The
existing spillway consists of a 15-inch CMP placed at the base of the
embankment.
1
