INTRODUCTION
Sedimentation Pond 004 is an earthen embankment structure constructed by
Peabody Coal Company in the mid-1970's as a temporary sediment structure
to control runoff and sediment from the disturbed areas of the Nucla
Mine. Sedimentation Pond 004 is located in Section 31 of Township 46
North, Range 15 West, Northwest of the town of Nucla, Colorado (see
Exhibit 13-4) .
INSPECTION
On July 8, 1986, engineers from Peabody' s Compliance Engineering
Department inspected Sediment Pond No. 004. The purpose of this
inspection was to assess the safety and general condition of the structure
with respect to the regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Division (CMLRD). As a result of this inspection, it was determined that
the storage capacity of No. 004 was inadequate and there was no
nonclogging, dewatering device. It is Peabody's intention to repair these
deficiencies in accordance with the remedial compliance plan contained in
this report.
SITE DESCRIPTION
LAND USE
Sediment Pond No. 004 has a 6.3-acre watershed that is tributary to Tuttle
Draw. This watershed is classified as approximately 100 percent
reclaimed.
EMBANKMENT
The existing embankment is a homogeneous earth fill . The top width of
the embankment is a minimum 12 feet wide with upstream and downstream
slopes of approximately 2H:1V, respectively.
