INTRODUCTION
Sediment Pond 001 is an earthen embankment structure constructed by
Peabody Coal Company in the mid-1970's as a temporary sediment structure
to control runoff and sediment from the disturbed areas of Nucla Mine.
Sediment Pond 001 is located in Section 36 of Township 47 North, Range 16
West, northwest of the town of Nucla.
INSPECTION
On July 8, 1986, engineers from Peabody's Compliance Engineering
Department inspected Sediment Pond 001. The purpose of this inspection
was to assess the safety and general condition of the structure with
respect to the regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
(CMLRD). While, as a result of this inspection it was determined that the
storage capacity of 001 was inadequate, it was determined that the safety
and general condition of the structure is satisfactory. This report
contains Peabody's remedial compliance plan.
SITE DESCRIPTION
LAND USE
Sediment Pond 001 has a 485-acre watershed that is tributary to Tuttle
Draw. This watershed is classified as approximately 53 percent
undisturbed, 15 percent disturbed, and 32 percent reclaimed.
EMBANKMENT
The existing embankment is a homogeneous earth fill and is presently very
well vegetated. The top width of the embankment is 15-foot wide with
upstream and downstream slopes of approximately lh:ly each. The existing
spillway consists of a v-notched wier placed in a trapezoidal channel .
DESIGN ANALYSIS
GENERAL
Sediment Pond 001 was evaluated and redesigned to meet or exceed the
1
