density requirements. Drill hole descriptions, chemical analyses, and textural analysis <br /> data from Phase I sampling indicate lateral variability in the, local depositional <br /> environment. Based upon the cropline to recovery line variability, Peabody selected <br /> (meeting, G. Wendt and S. Renner, June 22, 1987 and letter G. Wendt to P. O'Connor, July <br /> 6, 1987), and CMLRD approved three additional sample locations to accurately delineate <br /> areas of acidic and/or sodic overburden and interburden. The combined Phase 1/II sampling <br /> intensity for the Nucla East study area is 80 acres/hole. <br /> A lithium-based drill stem joint lubricant was used at all 1987 sample sites. Holes were <br /> drilled primarily with air until circulation was lost. Water injections were occasionally <br /> utilized to restore circulation at Sites 881E and 886E. <br /> The core drilling and sampling methods were identical to those previously described for <br /> Phase I. Overburden cuttings (chip samples) were collected exclusively with air from the <br /> combination bore/core holes. The vertical sampling increment for cuttings samples was <br /> adjusted at each individual location in response to the encountered geologic strata. Chip <br /> samples were collected from the soil surface to the depth at which cutting circulation was <br /> hampered or lost for a particular hole. Subsequently, once ground water was encountered, <br /> core samples were collected. A geophysical log which included density, resistivity, and <br /> natural gamma was also completed for each hole. Once all chip samples and cores were <br /> drilled, sampled, described, and boxed, they were shipped by truck to InterMountain Lab in <br /> Farmington, New Mexico. <br /> Parameter Selection - Phase I <br /> The Phase I analyses list for Nucla East was developed after an extensive review of recent <br /> literature, the Division's overburden sampling guidelines (CMLRD, 1982), consultation with <br /> Division personnel , and previous sampling conducted at the existing Nucla Mine. The OIU <br /> monitoring plan was submitted to the Division for approval on February 20, 1987 (letter, <br /> G. Wendt to P. O'Connor). A letter of agreement on the proposed OIU baseline study for <br /> Nucla East was received from the Division on April 24, 1987 (letter, P.
