In summary, the following analyses were justified based upon Phase I
results and were performed on Phase II OIU samples collected from Mine
Areas 2 and 3 to assess revegetation potential or to evaluate potential
impacts to water quality:
1. Saturation Percentage
2. pH
3. EC
4. Total Sulfur
5. Sulfur fractionation when potential acidity exceeds the
neutralization potential and when the total sulfur content is
greater than 0.5 percent.
6. Neutralization Potential
7. Acid Base Potential
8. Manganese
9. Molybdenum, nickel and zinc for site 873E only.
10. Iron
Laboratory Methods. The parameter/procedure list utilized for the 1986
OIU samples sites is listed in Table 6-8.
Overburden, Interburden and Underburden Lithology - Phase II .
Lithologic descriptions for drill holes 873E, 874E, 875E and 876E are
contained in Appendix 6-1. The analytical results for these locations
are presented in Appendix 6-4. Based upon these descriptions and the
chemical and analytical analyses , the following overburden and
interburden lithologic units were developed:
Unit 1: The upper four to five feet of overburden consisting of
brown to light brownish gray sandstone and light gray
to gray shale.
Unit 2: The oxidized and weathered upper Dakota Coal seam and
encapsulating very dark gray to black carbonaceous
shale. The average thickness is three to five feet.
6-39 Revised 3/6/87
