ABSTRACT
On September 16 , 1979 , Western Cultural Resource
Management , Inc. conducted a cultural resource inventory
for Peabody Coal Company on approximately 100 acres located
north of Nucla, Colorado, Township 47N, Range 15W, Section
25 in Montrose County. Peabody Coal plans to expand mining
operations at the Nucla Mine, and under the Office of Sur-
face Mining Regulations , Title 30 CFR, Part 700 , a cultural
resource inventory is required. Approximately 50 acres of
the area surveyed is currently permitted under Colorado Mined
Lard Reclamation Permit No. 75-36 , and the remaining 50 acres
is being applied for. Not all this additional 50 acres will
be disturbed by mining. None of the area surveyed contains
federal surface or minerals .
A 100% pedestrian survey of the study area yielded two
aboriginal open campsites containing ground and chipped
stone. Western Cultural Resource Management_,_ Inc. recommends
that neither site be found eligible to the National Register
of Historic Places .
v
