Abandoned Irrigated Hayland. These areas were at one time irrigated and cultivated for
hay production. Abandonment was due to advancing mining disturbances, or poor site
characteristics related to normal husbandry and flood irrigability.
Irrigated Hayland. Included are those agricultural lands remaining within the permit area
which continue to be irrigated and managed as such.
Residence. This area contains the remaining farmstead structures of the former Rice
property. The area is to be leased as a residence until mining activities preclude
habitation.
Mine Facilities and Related Areas. This area includes the former boneyard, the existing
shop/office building, the new mine facilities area, the explosive storage plus access, all
sediment ponds and access to them and those portions of the ash disposal area within the
permit area.
Nucla East Mine Expansion Permit and Study Area
The preceding land use discussion, with the exception of those portions applicable to the
currently active Nucla Mine northwest of the Nucla East expansion area, also pertains to
the proposed expansion permit area as well as a larger study area. The study area is the
same as that contained within the Baseline Vegetation study area as presented in Addendum
10-2 to Tab 10 and shown on Exhibit 10-2. Because the land use and vegetation types
studied in the expansion area have a cause and affect relationship, the reviewer should
review both Addendum 10-2 and this tab concurrently. The Vegetation Baseline Map (Tab 10,
Exhibit 10-2) should be considered the land use map of the expansion area for purposes of
this discussion.
The land use within the entire Nucla East Mine expansion study area is related to
agriculture, grazing, and related support facilities (see Exhibit 10-2). Approximately 84
percent of the proposed permit area (Table 4-2) is in irrigated agriculture or a direct
result of irrigation (i.e., the swale vegetation type). In comparison, approximately 77
percent of the study area shows this relationship. The remaining 16 percent of the
proposed permit area and 23 percent of the study area are composed of sagebrush rangeland,
abandoned orchards, farmsteads and facilities, irrigation ditches, disturbed areas, roads,
etc.
4-5 Revised 04/11/88
