Arkansas Basin
• Leica Prism Monitoring System: This system consists of multiple Leica monitoring stations
mounted in fixed locations, and multiple target prisms mounted on highwalls of the pit. These
systems, similar to a surveying total station, are automated systems that will record any
movement of the prisms. At a programmed interval, currently established at one hour intervals,
the systems will record the position of multiple target prisms using a laser system.
• Orion GPS Deformation Monitoring: This system consists of monitoring stations that will be
installed at fixed locations. The monitoring system will record the location of the fixed stations at
15 minute intervals to detect movement.
• Radar System: A radar system is also being established to monitor Bartlett Ridge, between
Bartlett and Little Bartlett peaks, to monitor any displacement in this area of the pit.
• Extensometers: Two extensometers are also available for use to monitor movement in specific
areas of the pit, if necessary.
Each of these automated systems will alert mine department personnel of movement within the pit, and
an alarm and notification system is being developed and implemented to protect the safety of personnel
and equipment. A summary of pit stability monitoring can be included in the annual report to DRMS.
- How often are the levels in the pizeometer near the 5 -shaft pump station checked and recorded? Please
note the location of this pizeometer on the appropriate figures.
The piezometer adjacent to 5 Shaft is located to the south of 5 Shaft, on the east side of the Mosquito
Fault, at the location shown on the revised Figure 2 in the Water Quality Monitoring Plan. The water
levels in this piezometer are recorded on a monthly basis.
- What are the construction details of this piezometer, and is there any reason this well could /should not also
be used as an internal water quality monitoring point?
The construction details for the piezometer cannot be located. The 5 Shaft piezometer is located on the
same side of the Mosquito Fault as the 5 Shaft to ensure groundwater levels remain below the top
elevation of the fault. Although this well could potentially be used as an internal monitoring location, it is
anticipated that water quality at this location will not be representative of water on the west side of the
fault. Additionally, since the completion details of the piezometer are unknown, the well should be used
only for water level measurements.
- There do not appear to be any internal monitoring points upstream of the Point of Compliance (POC) well
( ARwell). DRMS suggests at least one pair of nested wells be installed in a suitable location between ARwell
and the Mosquito fault to monitor internal water quality and the effectiveness of the 5 -shaft pumping.
Surface water data in the Arkansas River have been collected above and below 5 Shaft and the Mosquito
Fault since 1996, and these data have been included in the revised WQMP. Climax also will establish an
additional groundwater monitoring site between the ARwell POC location and the Mosquito Fault. Climax
is developing a conceptual hydrogeological model of this and other areas of the mine site to help
characterize groundwater flow patterns for the purpose of identifying new monitoring well locations The
results of this analysis will be completed in March 2012 to allow sufficient time for DRMS review and
