INSPECTION REPORT
Site:National King Coal Mine, Hesperus, Colorado
Inspected By: Don R. May, P.E., Project Engineer
Inspection Date: 2 nd Quarter Inspection, March 12, 2012
236 5 .
ihll.r «.e..Nl•
Because of snow cover some of the surface features were not visible during the inspection
Ponds: Photograph 1 shows the west pond which is in good condition but may need cleaning
this summer. The east pond is also in good condition. The inlets, outlets and embankments of
both ponds were inspected and appear to be operating as designed. Some water is present
in the pond due to snow melt and the staff gage does not appear to accurately reflect the
depth.
Drainage Ditches: All drainage ditches were inspected. Snow in most of the ditches made
detailed inspection difficult but they generally appeared to be in good condition. There is at
least one location on the "dirty water" ditch that runs from the top of the pile down through the
yard and to the west pond that has experienced some erosion on the left bank (looking down
stream). All ditches should be inspected and repaired as needed.
One of the black corrugated plastic drainage pipes in the upper yard is broken (photograph
2). In addition the drop inlet grate does not appear to seat properly on the inlet rim. These
items should be repaired. Photographs 3 and 6 show pipe outlets that are part of the
drainage system located in and around the yard area. Care should be taken to assure that
pipe inlets and outlets are regular cleaned of sediment and other debris. Drainage in and
around the upper and lower yards is working well and both are in good shape. Except where
noted, all drainage features have been constructed and are operating as stated in the
drainage plan submitted to the Division of Minerals and Geology.
Coal Waste Pile: In photograph 4, a portion of the upper waste pile face can be seen and
appears to be stable and in good condition. Photograph 5 shows the top of the waste pile. As
mentioned in previous reports the cross slope of this surface should be surveyed to confirm
that it meets the design. In addition, the density of new fill material should be periodically
checked to assure design compaction. Except for any items mentioned above the fill on the
waste pile has been constructed as specified in the design approved by the Division of
Minerals and Geology.
