Interoffice Memorandum
To: Jim Stark
From: Zach Trujillo
Subject: West Elk— Haul Road Landslide Remediation Review
Date: 4/06/2012
Jim —
After reviewing West Elk's Haul Road Landslide Remediation submittal, I have the following comments:
• Please have West Elk submit a slope stability analysis of the constructed repairs including compaction test
results, soil and aggregate material properties, location of phreatic surface and calculated factor of safety.
• Please have West Elk submit an as -built earthwork drawing of the east slide.
• Please have West Elk show the location of Section A -A as drawn on Figure: 4.
Although this may not be necessary for the review of the Haul Road Landslide Remediation submittal, have any
additional seeps been located above the current slide? Looking at Drawing No. F -5, Section: Typical Slide Repair, it
appears that an additional slide could occur, washing out the section of Haul Road above, if similar conditions exist. The
combination of the steep slope (as drawn) with the underlying bed rock could create a similar slide in the future.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Zach
