•
of salvaged soil depth requirements in mined land recla-
mation, and any apparent depth' requirements inferred
from the results should be considered as minimums.
One of the mandated goals of stripmine reclamation
is to return mined land to the "approximate` origina
contour" (U.S. Congress, 1977). Although this i
achieved by grading the spoils to a specific topography
there is also a tendency to respread the spoils with more
or less even layers of subsoil and topsoil across the
landscape. In North Dakota and several other states,
the total thickness of respread soil is determined on the
basis of the properties of underlying spoil. For construc-
tion of sloping, rolling landforms, the results of this
study demonstrate that relatively lesser thicknesses of
respread soil are required at sideslope and lower land-
scape positions to achieve a given level of soil productiv-
ity. More of the salvaged soil resource could be returned
to upper and summit positions, where it would serve as
a buffer against long -term erosion losses that result in
transfer of topsoil from upper landscape positions to
lower positions.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We acknowledge the technical assistance of Mr. Robert W.
Aune and Mr. Larry F. Renner and the work of the North •
American Coal Corporation in construction of the double
wedge, including the following employees: Mr. Robert E.
