they were identified as Udorthents, which actually gave less information to the
user of the soil survey report than the earlier generic, non - taxonomic names.
Established series are now used for mapping minesoils.
The National Cooperative Soil Survey is continuing efforts to develop
minesoil classification. Regional, national, and international committees are
actively reviewing available information and initiating new research to fill voids
in the data base. An International Committee on Anthropogenic Soils has been
charged with defining appropriate classes in Soil Taxonomy for all soils that have
their major properties derived from human activities.
XVII. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Alex Topalanchik, Soil Cor-
relator, with the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Morgantown, West
Virginia, in the compilation of the established minesoil series list, and Dr. James A.
DeMent, DeMent and Associates, Inc., for helpful comments on the manuscript.
This chapter is the result of a joint contribution of the West Virginia Agri-
cultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the Tennessee Agricultural Experi-
ment Station. It was approved as scientific article no. 2500. This research was
supported with funds appropriated under the Hatch Act.
