Whetstone
Associates
Technical Memorandum
5. Set the transducer to read at 15- second intervals.
6. Select either the 10 foot or 20 foot length straddle packer assembly, and install on end
(bottom) of the standpipe (Figure 1). Attach transducer near the center of the test section and
trip in to the first (lowermost) test interval.
7. Inflate the packer using nitrogen gas.
8. Allow the water level in the shut -in test interval to stabilize and record the level prior to the
start of testing.
9. Connect the pump to the top of the standpipe and inject water into the test interval through
the packer assembly. The injection test usually consists of five pressure steps (three up and
two down) lasting three to five minutes each. Injection pressure and flow rate are recorded
during each pressure step.
10. Deflate the packer and trip out to the depth of the next test interval.
11. Repeat steps 6 through 9 until all test intervals of the selected straddle packer length (10 or
20 foot) are complete, then trip out of hole.
12. If required, install the other length of straddle packer assembly onto the end of the standpipe
and trip in to depth of the first test interval.
13. Repeat steps 6 through 9 until all test intervals are complete, then trip out of hole.
The boreholes will be adequately flushed to remove the drilling fluid and any residue on the
borehole wall prior to testing. The flushing method will be approved by Whetstone prior to the start
of the testing program.
The tests will be performed by injecting clean water into the test sections using a non - surging pump
located at the surface. An adequate water supply of 2,000 to 3,000 gallons will be available at the
start of each test. The injection pressure will be controlled by a bypass valve with return hose
between the pump and the top of the drill rods (Figure 2). Test section pressures will be measured
by a non - vented transducer located in the section, and by gauges (0 to 100 psi) located near the top
of the stand pipe. The pressure gauge will be easily visible from the bypass valve setup. The
maximum injection pressure in the test section shall not exceed 0.5 psi /foot of depth to prevent
hydraulic fracturing of the bedrock. All flow meters shall be checked prior to the start of testing
using a calibrated container and stopwatch.
4109C.120309 5
