2011 AHR McClane & Munger Canyon Mines Page 5
The water quality of the discharge met discharge permit requirements with the
exception of failing the WET test. However the mine discharge ceased.
Therefore, accelerated testing will be performed as soon as the mine begins
discharging again.
Table 6 contains analyses of mine water discharged into East Salt Creek in the
first quarter. The mine water had a TDS value of 2,288 mg /I. The TDS value for
East Salt Creek at SW -1 was 1,817 mg /I during the first quarter of 2011. The
following tables show there was potentially only minor degradation (0.3%
increase in TDS) during the first quarter. The mine did not discharge during the
4th quarter 2010 or the 2nd or P quarters of 2011.
PHC East Salt Creek First Quarter 2011
Total Dissolved Solids
Flow gpm
Flow cfs
TDS
SW -1 East Salt Creek
2,424
5.4
1,817
Mine Discharge
26.8
0.06
2,288
Combined Flow
2,450
1 5.46
1,822
PHC East Salt Creek
Total Dissolved Solids
SW -1 Upstream
SW -8 Downstream
Chan e
1 s' Quarter 20111
1817
1 2288
+471
The quality of the water at the upstream (SW -1) monitoring point was better than
the downstream (SW -8) monitoring point during the first quarter of 2011 when
the mine discharge could have had a minor impact on the upstream quality.
However, the quality of SW -1 was better than SW -8 during the 4th quarter of
2010 when the mine was not discharging. And, the quality of SW -8 was better
than SW -1 during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2011. Therefore, it is difficult to
predict what causes the TDS in East Salt Creek to increase or decrease as the
results were not consistent during the water year. Based on the aforementioned
results, it is unlikely the mine discharge had a negative impact on the quality of
East Salt Creek. Total dissolved solids (TDS) in the above tables are laboratory
values in mg /I.
Groundwater
Tables 5 and 5a shows the results of groundwater sampling during the water
year. New Table 5a is for GW -10 and will be used to gather a year of baseline
data. Baseline data for Table 5 from the 1981 & 1986 monitoring is also shown.
Baseline data for GW -9 for the period October 2007 through September 2008 is
included. Results of quality sampling are consistent with the results from
previous years. GW -4 was in close proximity to a hay field that is irrigated during
