the contents to ADR for disposal to the VLF. <br />• For liquid spills, contain the area with the absorbent socks and flush the spill area with <br />Calcium Hypochlorite and large amounts of water. Used absorbent socks should be <br />disposed of in a labeled sealable bucket and the mop and bucket used in the cleanup should <br />be completely rinsed and disposed of in an appropriate manner that complies with State and <br />Federal Regulations (contact the Environmental Resources Department). <br />Cupels and Crucibles: <br />• The lab produces cupels and crucibles that contain recoverable metals, including lead. <br />Cupels and crucibles are handled in a manner intended to minimize the potential for spillage. <br />• While the spillage would usually be within the laboratory facility, some debris could be <br />released to the ground during transport to the storage area, or during transfer to trucks used <br />for shipping of these materials to facilities for recovery of metals values. In the event of such <br />a release, the material must be picked up in its entirety and placed with the materials to be <br />recycled for metals recovery. <br />Di Isobutyl Ketone ( DIBK ) <br />• DIBK is flammable. If in the event that a spill occurs, NO METAL TOOLS or tools that could <br />create a spark should be used in the clean up. <br />• Assure that the area is well ventilated. DIBK vapor is heavier than air. Avoid prolonged <br />exposure at floor level <br />• Contain the spill using sorbent socks found in the Spill kits in the Wet and Metallurgical Labs <br />• Apply a considerable amount of vermiculite ( found in the Spill Kit) to the spill and pick up the <br />contaminated product. <br />• Used absorbent socks and vermiculite should be disposed of in a labeled sealable bucket <br />and the apparatus used in the cleanup should be completely rinsed and disposed of in an <br />appropriate manner that complies with State and Federal Regulations (contact the <br />Environmental Resources Department). <br />5.3 Spill Path Monitoring <br />If a spill or leak has the potential to migrate from the point of occurrence, spill monitoring will be <br />implemented following clean up. Development of the monitoring plan will be determined by the nature <br />and extent of the spill and the potential environmental hazards created by the spill. <br />The potential for spills of fuel, oil, coolants, or ANFO to migrate from the point of occurrence is <br />minimal. These materials will be quickly absorbed into soil material. If a spill of these materials has <br />the potential to migrate to surface water, a berm(s) will be placed upgradient of the potential point of <br />entry to the water and surface water monitoring will be implemented downstream, if necessary. <br />Spill monitoring equipment is available on site. Soil along the spill pathway will be monitored and <br />decontaminated and /or moved as necessary. If there is a potential for the spill to migrate off -site, <br />samples will be obtained expeditiously from down - gradient, existing surface and groundwater stations <br />and any additional water monitoring points deemed appropriate to monitor the potential migration <br />pathways. The spilled material also may be tested to evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation. <br />6.0 EXTERNAL SPILL REPORTING PROCEDURES <br />Spill reporting is one the most critical elements in this SRP /SPCC. It is CC &V's policy for the <br />first responder to notify their Supervisor or contact Carlton Security on the radio as the first step in <br />reporting. The next step is equally important and involves contacting the Environmental Resources <br />Department. Timm Comer will act as the Environmental Response Coordinator (ERC) for CC &V <br />under the auspices of this Environmental Response Plan. As Environmental Response Coordinator, <br />one of Comer's duties is to make sure the external reporting is done in a timely manner in compliance <br />with all permits and environmental regulations.
