Fuel Farm Petroleum Products in Tanks and Totes
4.1.3.2 Quantities of Material Stored and Secondary Containment (Fuel Farm)
By referring to Table 6 above and the tank inventory in Appendix C, it is evident that over 200,000
gallons of petroleum products can be stored in the tanks and containers at any point in time.
Secondary containment for the Fuel Farm is provided by an earthen berm lined with an 80 mil VLDPE
material overlain with gravel. The total estimated capacity of the secondary containment is 250,000
gallons. Since the largest tank is 100,000 gallons and the containment is 250,000 gallons, adequate
secondary containment exists for all containers, as discussed in section 4.1.3.4 below.
4.1.3.3 Spill Potential of Materials at the Fuel Farm
There are several potential spill scenarios at the Fuel Farm including (but not limited to):
(1) Tank rupture within containment - very unlikely, but spill would be captured by containment
(2) Hose rupture during filling of vehicles - possible in fueling area on one of the pads
(3) Spillage during off- loading from tanker truck - possible on west side of fuel farm
(4) Spillage during the fueling of large mining equipment - likely if equipment moves during fueling
operations or if operator does not pay attention to details such as replacing fill hoses and staying with
vehicle during fueling
Should any of the above scenarios actually take place the volume of petroleum products or antifreeze
is anticipated to be on the order of <5 to several hundred gallons.
4.1.3.4 Spill Prevention and Control at the Fuel Farm
The Fuel Farm secondary containment cell is lined with 80 mil VLDPE liner overlain with gravel.
Secondary containment volume above the gravel is 250,000 gallons (greater than 110% of the largest
tank). The large diesel storage tanks are bottom - filled and bottom - emptied through a manifold
located southeast of the contained area. Each tank fill line has a check valve. The diesel, lubricants,
and antifreeze storage tanks have level indicators with continuous read out boxes to the nearest
1 /10 Overfill protection consists of both audible and visible alarms (horn and lights). The high
level alarm is triggered when the fill level reaches one foot from the top of the tank.
Additions of the diesel fuel additive are automatic when fuel is added to the tank.
