February 7, 2007 -2-
2.0 FIELD MAPPING PROGRAM
2.1 General
Previous work relating to identification and classification of historical mine workings was undertaken
as part of the pre - feasibility study. The previous work involved a review of a large number of
historical mining records compiled by CC &V. This dataset of known features was filtered to identify
only those which have the potential to adversely affect the proposed Squaw Gulch VLF (i.e., those
features less than 100 feet below the existing ground surface, see Drawing 3). This review was
supplemented by recent aerial photographs, which depict areas of surface disturbance and possible
mining or prospecting activities.
The current Phase I historical workings program satisfies the following objectives:
• Field verify the existence and location of the features identified previously in the
pre - feasibility study.
• Locate and identify previously undocumented historical mining features.
• Develop a photographic log of major historical workings.
• Based on visual observations, characterize the historical workings identified as
part of the Phase I reconnaissance program.
• Use the data obtained from the Phase I field reconnaissance program to develop
recommendations for the Phase II historical workings field investigation.
1106¢ Ia0b90MPIIMISPWORXRNGS- FNLa1FEOOT PH IMSrOWCACWORRR.GSyVIA,PEso,00c Golder Associates
063 -2140
A Golder engineer (David Geier) performed the surface reconnaissance program. The program
consisted of reconnaissance -level field mapping of the historic mine workings located within the
proposed Squaw Gulch VLF footprint, using a handheld GPS to record the locations of visible
historical workings and digital camera to photograph major workings. Characterization of historical
features was done in the field, and verified in the office by reviewing the photographic log. Features
used to characterize historical workings include the size of the working, the type of working (shaft,
adit, depression, test pit, etc.), the presence of timbers or wooden boards, the extent of the
development rock pile, the presence of nearby buildings, and the presence of depressions, sinkholes,
or additional workings connecting to or surrounding the working in question.
Drawing 1 shows the locations of the visible historical mine workings within the proposed Squaw
Gulch VLF footprint. A photographic log of the major workings is presented in Figures 1 through 49.
