Your plan also states that some of the existing dump material will be removed to determine if it has any
"values." How much do you plan to remove? Will this removal be performed on the pad surface, and/or
result in a pit or trench to be backfilled?
Please state whether the underground extension work you propose will involve drilling and blasting.
Extension of the drift will generate waste rock, which will need to be placed. Please clarify if it will be
disposed of underground or brought out to the pad. Please be aware that all mineralized material that is not
removed for assay should be replaced underground at the conclusion of the project to prevent it from
weathering and leaching in the future. All inert material brought to the surface should be placed in a stable
location and configuration.
The NOI does not state whether there will be any temporary structures built on the site, such as a portal
shed or shelter or storage structure. If there is to be a structure on the site please describe it, and show it on
the map. Also please state whether it is to be removed during reclamation.
The access to the site is to be via existing trail, mainly across land managed by the US Forest Service
(USFS), and patented claims owned by other parties. Have you contacted the USFS to inquire about the
need for an access permit?
You plan to access the site via OHV, which will require more than a foot- or horse - trail. This office does
not know whether the existing trail is currently wide enough to allow access by OHV. Will any significant
trail improvements be required? Please be aware that if you need to significantly widen, realign or change
the grade of the trail to support your project, those "improved" segments of the trail must be included in
the total affected area, and may also require reclamation at the conclusion of the project. Please see Rule
5.3.1(c).
During and after the project, the underground mine opening must be safeguarded (per Rule 5.3.1(f)). Your
plan states that bat bars will be installed during reclamation. How do you plan to safeguard the opening
during the prospecting phase? In order for us to evaluate the bat bar closure, please describe the size of the
opening to be closed. Is there competent rock at the portal brow to bolt the closure to?
Your responses maybe brief, but please be clear in your descriptions, as it will help us to evaluate the
project, its affected area, and the reclamation costs.
For all submittals, please provide two sets (hard copies) of each item, by sending them to me at the
Division's Durango Field Office: 691 CR 233, Room A -2, Durango, CO 81301. Please include the file
number shown above on all submitted materials.
If you have any questions you may reach me at the Durango Field Office (see address in preceding
paragraph) or by phone: 970 - 247 -5193, or 303 - 866 -3567 ext 8175.
Sincerely,
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Cc: Steve Shuey, DRMS Grand Junction
(c: \12 -03 docs \Wasatch NOI par /rco)
