The operator was represented by Walt Wright,
Keith Buescher, John Stafne, and James Nicholson, of Martin Marietta Materials. Martin Marietta Materials
recently purchased the mine from LaFarge West, Inc. and a Succession of Operator application is in review.
Backfilling and Grading:
The approved reclamation plan (Exhibit E of permit application) describes how the mine will be reclaimed to
blend with the adjacent open space lands. The plan calls for "full bench reclamation ", which is backfilling
benches so that the remaining slope is 45 degrees. Soil, degraded rock, and stockpiled topsoil will be spread
on regraded areas, and then these areas will be revegetated with shrubs, shrubs, and grasses. The quarry
floor will be revegetated with grasses. Areas in the northwestern and southwestern corners of the site have
recently been backfilled, graded, and seeded.
Financial Warranty:
Exhibit L of the permit application contains the operator's reclamation cost estimate which DRMS found
adequate in AM -03 in 2003. The estimate says the mine will disturb a maximum of 228 acres. The operator
currently has $1,453,291 of bond on deposit, which is $6,374 per acre of disturbance. This amount of bond is
adequate for reclaiming the disturbed lands, assuming no additional bond is necessary for mitigating impacts
from exposed ground water. DRMS will address the liability for exposed ground water as part of its review of
Page 2 of 4
