5.4.4 Ground Water
5.4.4.1 Monitoring Program
Ground water conditions in Arequa Gulch are assessed by three monitor wells (Figure 2-
2), designated ESPMW -1 (bedrock), CRMW -3A (bedrock) and CRMW -3B
(alluvium/shallow bedrock). ESPMW -1 is located in the granite adjacent to the
Diatreme. CRMW -3A and CRMW -3B are co- located to allow assessment of vertical
conditions of water level and water quality in the granites adjacent to the Diatreme.
Field parameters and water quality samples are collected quarterly at ESPMW -1,
CRMW -3A, and CRMW -3B and analyzed for the parameters listed in Table 3 -2.
5.4.4.2 Data
The period of record and compiled field and water quality data (number of
measurements, less than detection events, maximum value, minimum value, average
value, standard deviation, and median value) for ESPMW -1, CRMW -3A, and CRMW-
3B are provided in Tables 5 -15, 5 -16, and 5 -17, respectively. Figure 5 -10 shows the
hand level measurements for ESPMW -1, CRMW -3A, and CRMW -3B. Time series plots
of selected parameters (pH, nitrate, and sulfate) are provided in Figure 5 -11.
5.4.4.3 Discussion
Ground water levels in ESPMW -1, CRMW -3B, and CRMW -3A are shown in Figure 5-
10. The discontinuities in water levels for CRMW -3A and CRMW -3B in 1995 are due a
shift in the monitor well collar elevations by construction in the area. The discontinuities
in water levels for ESPMW -1 in 2001 through early 2006 are likely due the development
of the AGVLF and the reduction in infiltration and recharge to the local ground water
aquifer.
The timing and magnitude of the water levels peaks for the alluvium (CRMW -3B)
shallow bedrock (CRMW -3A) appear related to the melting and infiltration of the snow
in the spring months and the precipitation events in the summer and fall months.
Water quality conditions for ESPMW -1, CRMW -3A, and CRMW -3B are provided in
Tables 5 -15, 5 -16, and 5 -17. Shallow alluvium (CRMW -3B) and shallow bedrock
(CRMW -3A) ground waters in Arequa Gulch are characterized as calcium - sulfate water,
similar to the surface waters. Bedrock ground waters at ESPMW -1 are characterized as
calcium - bicarbonate water. Data in Tables 5 -15, 5 -16, and 5 -17 show a median pH value
'Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Hydrologic Evaluation for Mine Life Extension 2
26
