Drawing C -5 provides a visual and conceptual description of the general sequence of
mining and backfilling. Note that the annual progression shown in Drawing C -5 is
approximate and subject to change due to economics, weather conditions and other
factors.
5.4.2 Clearing, Grubbing and Growth Medium Removal
The currently approved clearing, grubbing, and growth medium removal methods will
not change. They are described here for general information. New information for
MLE2 includes estimated salvageable quantities for growth medium in areas proposed
for disturbance as part of MLE2 and a discussion of new and relocated growth medium
stockpiles required to allow planned development and reclamation under MLE2.
The area in which mining activities will occur will be cleared of trees and shrubs through
logging, removal for transplanting, and through the use of dozers. Large trees remaining
following logging will be salvaged and made available for firewood to employees. Trees
may be made available for transplanting and for Christmas trees to the general public.
Smaller trees, shrubs, and understory growth will then be removed with dozers.
Growth medium is generally described as any soil type that has appropriate qualities
necessary to support vegetation. As previously mentioned, portions of MLE2 area have
been historically mined and there are limited soil resources available in these areas.
CC &V will salvage growth medium reasonably available in areas to be disturbed for later
use in reclamation. Where present in adequate thickness and area (greater than six inches
in depth over an area of at least one acre in size), soils will be removed and stockpiled or
direct hauled to concurrent reclamation sites. It is estimated, based on available soils
information that there will be about 1.9 cubic yards ( "yd ") of potentially suitable soil in
the area of MLE2 development as well as areas of the approved MLE not yet disturbed,
that may be available for salvage. Past experience has shown that actual site conditions
may vary from those mapped due to, among other matters, historic disturbance, soil
depth, and rock outcroppings. The material available under MLE2 will be in addition to
the more than 1.5 million yd of soil that have been stockpiled as part of previously
approved development associated with the Cresson Project.
Growth medium stockpiles have been designated adjacent to the development areas. In
some cases, previously constructed stockpiles will need to be relocated to accommodate
development of MLE2. The growth medium stockpiles are shown on Drawing C -4b.
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension 2
5 -7
