thickness appears to exceed six inches over a sufficiently large area ( >1 acre). Buried soils, such
as are found in disturbed areas, generally are not salvaged. Site - specific conditions may, at
times, justify salvage of weathered parent material. Projected soil volumes to be salvaged and
available for use in reclamation can be found in Reclamation and Closure, Section 12.0 of this
document.
Range carrying capacities have been determined to be an average value of 1.8 acres per Animal
Unit Month ( "AUM ") for the Adderton -Rosane complex, 4.0 acres per AUM for the Quander-
Bushpart soil, 5.2 acres per AUM for the Rogert and Herbman soils, and 7.8 acres per AUM for
the Rogert-rock outcrop and Seitz soils (see Appendix 3, Volume III).
4.9 Vegetation
The vegetation information for MLE2 area is based on vegetation mapping conducted by Arcadis
in July 2011. Previous vegetation mapping within the Cresson Project area has been done to
support past mine planning. A complete discussion of site vegetation and the Arcadis survey
results for MLE2 are provided in the Arcadis Baseline Technical Report for Soils and Biological
Resources found in Appendix 3, Volume III of this document. A map of the vegetation areas can
be found as Figure 3 -1 in Appendix 3, Volume III of this document.
Vegetation units identified as part of the 2011 survey include aspen- dominated woodlands;
brush/montane scrub; open, conifer - dominated woodlands; dense, conifer - dominated woodlands;
natural grasslands; disturbed grasslands; riparian woodlands; wet meadows; disturbed areas; and
reclaimed areas.
As noted in the discussion of soils, much of the Cresson Project is disturbed by historic mine -
related activities and current Cresson Project development (e.g., underground mine rock dumps,
prospect pits, surface mines, overburden storage areas, roads).
The most prevalent vegetation type within the proposed new MLE2 disturbance is natural
grassland. This community shows variations in species dominance according to slope and
aspect. In addition, grasslands are found as re- established on historically disturbed areas, but the
composition, density, and cover of vegetation is substantially different from the undisturbed
natural grassland community.
Forest vegetation communities also are common within the District and are represented by
aspen- dominated woodlands; open, conifer - dominated woodlands; and dense, conifer - dominated
woodlands. Tree species vary in species dominance according to slope and aspect. The more
Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
Cresson Project Mine Life Extension 2
4 -23
