Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. Billings is classified as a "Fine - silty, mixed,
active, calcareous, mesic Typic Torrifluvent". The official NRCS soil series description for

Billings Typical Sample "71-0-1" Site and Profile Description: 3% slope, south
aspect; greasewood vegetation with bare spots of white alkali; alluvial plain position; local,
highly alkaline alluvium parent material; moderate erosion in the vicinity of the sample
site; GPS coordinates: North 39 degrees, 10.960'; West 108 degrees, 47.384'.
AC horizon — 0 to 6 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3)
moist; moderate medium platy structure; slightly hard dry consistence, friable moist
consistence, and sticky and slightly plastic wet consistence; few coarse, medium, fine,
and very fine roots; moderately effervescent (moderately calcareous); from lab data:
pH =8.2 (moderately alkaline), EC =1.62 (nonsaline), SAR =7.23 (slightly sodic); gradual
smooth boundary.
C1 horizon — 6 to 18 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) silt loam, yellowish brown
(10YR 514) moist; massive structure; hard dry consistence, firm moist consistence, and
sticky and slightly plastic wet consistence; few coarse, medium, fine, and very fine roots;
strongly effervescent (strongly calcareous); from lab data: pH =7.9 (moderately alkaline),
EC =6.55 (slightly saline), SAR =8.56 (moderately sodic); gradual wavy boundary.
02 horizon —18 to 40 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silty clay loam, dark yellowish
brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive structure; hard dry consistence, firm moist consistence,
and sticky and slightly plastic wet consistence; strongly effervescent (strongly calcareous);
from lab data: pH =8.7 (strongly alkaline), EC =26.0 (strongly saline), SAR =29.8 (highly
sodic); gradual wavy boundary.
C3 horizon — 40 to 72 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silty clay loam, dark yellowish
brown (10YR 4/4) moist; massive structure; hard dry consistence, firm moist consistence,
and sticky and slightly plastic wet consistence; strongly effervescent (strongly calcareous);
from lab data: pH =8.8 (strongly alkaline), EC =31.0 (strongly saline), SAR =41.2 (very
highly sodic); gradual wavy boundary; did not hit bedrock.
