2.04.4 Cultural and Historic Resources Information
(1) Cultural and Historic Resource Reports are presented in Volume I Tab 2.
Surface Facilities
Grand River Institute (GRI) conducted a Class III cultural resource inventory
for the proposed loadout area in Mesa County, Colorado. A files search was
completed on 30 April 2010. The pedestrian field inventory, which included
197 acres of private land, was carried out between the 12th and 14th of May
2010. This work was conducted by and the report prepared by Cad E. Conner
(Principal Investigator), Barbara Davenport, Nicole Darnell, Jim Conner, and
Dana Archuleta, under BLM Antiquities Permit No. C- 52775.
The files search indicated that no cultural resources had been previously
recorded within the block area. A search of the historic government land office
survey maps dated 1918 by Tufts, indicated that the historic Salt Lake Wagon
Road passed through the present study area near its southwest corner. No
evidence of the road could be found within the present project boundary.
Additionally, approximately 60 acres of the present survey block has been
previously disturbed by the construction of evaporation ponds. As a result of
the survey, three historic isolated finds (5ME17170 through 5ME17172) were
recorded. All the resources were field evaluated as not eligible for listing
on the National Register of Historic Places and no further work is required.
Accordingly, archaeological clearance was recommended.
Permit Application 2.04 -5 08/11
