mineral exploration, development, and operations activities be conducted in a manner
that minimizes adverse environmental impacts on National Forest surface resources (36
CFR part 228.8).
The Klondike Mineral Exploration Project will take place in the Klondike Mining
District, in an area approximately eight miles northwest of the town of Saguache. (See
Figure 1) Surface disturbing activiities which include road rehabilitation and maintenance,
as well as, portal reconstruction will occur on unpatented mining claims controlled by
BLMC. The exploration activities will be conducted for one year or less from the crate of
authorization, with anticipated seasonal closures.
Figure 2 — BLMC unpatented claims in black and patented claims in red.
Access to the work site will be from Findley Gulch Road (FS Road 880) and north on an
existing mine road that crosses beiiween private property and Rio Grande National llorest.
(See figures 3- 5) There will be no new road building and no stream crossings to access
the Homestake Mine portal. The IFLMC's proposed road maintenance and rehabilitation
will be performed by either a bulkcozer or grader. The dimensions of the road are
proposed to be no wider than 10 feet for the length of approximately 1 /2 a mile. Four 12
inch culverts or hardened crossings may be installed in areas where there are drainage
issues.
Klondike Mineral Exploration Praject - Decision Memo 2 1Page
