11-42. Aquatic worms of the family Tubuficidae dominated the mud slide lake fauna. These •
crga ni sms are quite tolerant of environmental stress which is probably more pronounced in
the mud slide lake than in the upper beaver pond.
The upper beaver pond contained a considerably higher abundance and diversity of bottom
fauna than did the mud slide lake. The amphipod, Hyalella azteca, and bae tid mayflies
dominated the upper beaver pond bottom fauna indicating good water quality. Further
evidence of good water quality is presented by the abundance of the amphipod Cammarus
Constant inflow of freshwater and nutrients probably contributes to the more favorable
environment present in the upper beaver pond than found in the mud slide lake.
Literature Cited
American Ornithologists' Union. 1957.
