• TA8 8
CLIMATOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Introduction
Tab 8 describes the climatology of the proposed Seneca II-W Mine area. This information
is provided to fulfill the requirements of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
regulations at Section 2.04.8. The information summarized in Tab 8 includes: 1) mean
monthly precipitation; 1) mean monthly temperature and temperature ranges; and 3) average
direction and speed of the prevailing winds.
Data summaries were derived from two sources to describe conditions at the Seneca II-W
Mine. Peabody Coal Company collected data at the minesi to between March, 1980, and
October, 1987 (Figure 8-1). Parameters included wind speed, wind direction, and ambient
air temperature. No reliable precipitation data was obtained at the Seneca• II-W
meteorological site throughout the period of record. Meteorological data was also
• obtained from the station at Hayden, Colorado, located approximately six miles north of
the minesite. The Hayden Station has a 64-year record of temperature data and a 70-year
record of precipitation data. No wind or temperature range data are available from the
Hayden Station.
Precipitation and Temperature
Table 8-1 summa rues monthly precipitation and temperature normals for the Hayden Station
based upon standard averages derived for the period of record. These data were obtained
from "Climatological Data Annual Summary; Colorado, 1988", National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration.
Table 8-2 summarizes the temperature data collected at the meteorological station located
at the Seneca II-W minesite. The data includes daily average, daily maxima, daily minima,
and inferred ranges of temperature by month for the seven-year period of record.
In September, 1989, a 8elfort Model 5-780 Universal Rain Gage was installed at the
• meteorological station. The unit is equipped with a 32-day chart with resolution of
+/-0.01 inch and +/-1.0 hour. The gage will be used to characterize local precipitation
events.
1
