DIVISION OF RECLAMATION, MINING AND SAFETY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866 -3567
FAX: (303) 832 -8106
February 24, 2012
Ms. Gina Nance
GCC Rio Grande, Inc.
3372 Lime Rd
Pueblo, CO 81004
Re: Red Rock Plant & Limestone Mine, Permit No. M- 2002 -004, Exceedance of Groundwater
Numeric Protection Levels
Dear Ms. Nance:
On February 16, 2012, the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (Division) received your
"Second Half, 2011 Groundwater Monitoring Report". Page 3 of Table 2 in this report indicates the
Numeric Protection Level (NPL) for total dissolved solids (TDS) was exceeded in both MW -03 and
MW -04.
Enclosed for your reference is a copy of the December 8, 2009 letter from the Division establishing the
NPLs for Permit No. M- 2002 -004. The NPL for TDS was set at 2630 mg /L. The second half TDS
values collected on October 13, 2011 were 3060 mg/L and 2640 mg/L for MW -03 and MW -04,
respectively. Pursuant to the enclosed letter, TDS samples for MW -03 and MW -04 must be collected,
analyzed and reported in the next quarter following the October 13, 2011 samples exceeding the NPL.
Follow -up TDS samples are required to be obtained for MW -03 and MW -04 prior to March 31, 2012.
The results should be analyzed and reported to the Division within a month of their collection date so
the Division can determine if the sampling frequency needs to be increased to monthly basis.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 303 - 866 -3567 x8169.
Sincerely,
Enclosure
Timot y'".
