Conditions: Clear Moon: Waxing at about 60% Temp: 41 F down to 27 F Time: 1430 to 1930 Wildlife Survey Martin Mesa January 3, 2012 7 5 5 F('L 16;- ti4 1430 — Left Naturita 1422 — Encountered several raptors along highway and two turkeys crossing highway just before Uravan, no photos. 1518 — Arrived at intersection of R13 and S13 roads, no new tracks between highway and this point except rabbit. Proceeded on R13 to T12 road. 1531 — Lost traction on first slope on T12 road, no new tracks encountered to this point. Tried chains on front tires, still no go, pulled chains and returned to S13 road. 1620 — Lost traction just past switchback, put chains back on, little shaky but made it to the top. 1700 — Encountered first set of old deer tracks on top of Martin Mesa, tracks made around middle of December during or just after last snow. Three photos. 1704 — Encountered elk tracks around ore bin area, tracks appeared to be same age as deer tracks referred to above, two or three elk, appeared to cross Martin Mesa heading to the NW. Fresh rabbit tracks in this area. One photo. 1708 — Headed back around to Farmer Girl main portal, no new tracks, one photo about half way there. 1710 — Last slope to Farmer Girl main portal, no new tracks, one photo. 1711 — Farmer Girl dump and main portal area, no new tracks, three photos. 1715 — Walked around on top for a while to determine direction elk had taken, they came in from the south, went past main portal just to the west and followed bench around to the ore bin area. From there they appeared to head off to the NW following the benches. My opinion is that there are no big game animals on Martin Mesa at this time and have not been any since the snow in the middle of December. Due to the lack of feed and water sources I would be very surprised to see any big game on Martin Mesa for the duration of this winter. 1930 — Arrived back at office.
