This inspection occurred as part of the Division's routine monitoring program for permitted operations. The
inspection was previously scheduled with the Costilla County Land Use Administrator, Mr. Mathew Valdez.
However, on the inspection day Mr. Valdez could not participate due to other work related obligations. This
report is accompanied by 2 photographs.
Mining activities were active. One wheel loader and a small bull dozer were at the pit, loading trucks with
mined material. Pit walls were graded to approximate 3H:1V and appeared stable, no evidence of slumping or
settling was observed. The excavation area exhibited internal drainage, no evidence of significant erosion or
sedimentation to affected lands and /or to the surrounding areas was observed. The site appeared stable and
well maintained. No problems or possible violations were observed.
An inactive excavation was observed approximately 1,200 feet east of the active pit area and immediately
north of County Road P. According to maps provided with application materials, the location of this inactive
excavation is within the permit boundary and on lands owned by Franklin Kuhn. The excavation had been
shallow and appeared limited to stripping of overburden for an area visually estimated as several acres.
Inspection Contact Address
Mathew Valdez
Land Use Administrator
Costilla County Planning & Zoning
P.O.
